Riccardo Muti will remain an influential presence during the 2023-24 season, conducting three subscription concerts and the gala program at Symphony Ball. Furthermore, he’ll lead the world premiere performances of Philip Glass’ The Triumph of Octagon (commissioned after CSO performed Symphony No 11 by composer) in concerts from September 28-30th 2022). This piece inspired by CSO performing Symphony No 11 inspired Muti to compose new work for The Triumph of Octagon series
The symphony will also premiere one of Anatoly Liadov’s rarely heard 20th-century works, the tone poem (or fable-tableau) The Enchanted Lake from 1909. It’s thought that Liadov drew inspiration for his composition from landscape painter Arseny Meshchersky’s paintings of mountain lakes in Russia.
The CSO and Chicago Children’s Theatre will collaborate to present Family Matinees, designed to introduce young audiences to orchestral music through hour-long programs based on classic storybooks with instrumental accompaniment. Offerings in 2018-19 will include “Three Little Pigs” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. In addition, Once Upon a Symphony with Sir Andrew Davis – known for four decades at Lyric Opera of Chicago including 21 years as its music director – will take place.
