The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut doesn’t list a standing discount for individual teachers, but it does open its doors free to them on its annual Teacher’s Day. Every teacher gets in free, and so does one guest, as long as you can show a valid school ID.
That makes it a good fit for the teacher who’s curious what a field trip here would look like before pitching it to the department, or who just wants a day at the aquarium with a friend. The aquarium describes the day as an informal gathering, with coffee in the morning and a chance to talk with its educators.
How To Get The Maritime Aquarium Teacher Discount
The aquarium’s announcement for its annual Teacher’s Day celebration says all teachers, along with one guest, receive complimentary admission, and that teachers must present a valid school ID to receive free admission. So the way you claim it is to bring your ID. Additional guests are welcome at standard admission prices, and tickets for them can be bought in advance or on site the day of the event.
The aquarium has also marked Teacher Appreciation Week with a Teacher Appreciation Day on the same terms. Its announcement for that day says all teachers, along with one guest, receive complimentary admission, and teachers must present a valid school ID.
What Happens On The Day
The Teacher’s Day announcement invites attendees to Oyster Hall in the morning for complimentary coffee, tea or hot chocolate between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., to talk with aquarium educators and fellow teachers. It says teachers can explore the exhibits and discover educational programs tailored for students from early elementary through high school, and that the informal gathering will highlight how the aquarium can serve as a dynamic extension of the classroom.
Tom Naiman, the aquarium’s vice president of education, is quoted in the announcement: “We’re thrilled to welcome them to the Aquarium and showcase how our exhibits and programs can enhance classroom learning in engaging, hands-on ways.” The same announcement lists the aquarium as open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Who Counts As A Teacher
Both announcements say all teachers. An earlier Teacher Weekend announcement was more specific: all teachers, including homeschool teachers, were welcome, and valid employee ID or documentation had to be provided. The newer ones ask for a valid school ID and don’t say anything about homeschool teachers, substitutes, aides or retired teachers, so if you’re one of those, it’s worth a call to the aquarium before you go.
If You’re Bringing A Class
The free admission covers a teacher and one guest, so a class trip is a separate booking. The Plan Your Visit page asks “Visiting with a Group of 10 or More?” and says group pricing is available for schools, summer camps, scouts, students, and chaperones. At an earlier Teacher Appreciation Weekend, aquarium educators also had information about financial assistance teachers can take back to their schools, though the recent announcements don’t mention it.
Visiting On Any Other Day
The Plan Your Visit page lists the aquarium’s regular admission prices and a few other discounts, and a teacher discount isn’t among them. It says veterans and active duty military members receive a $5 discount off adult tickets, available on site only, and that participants in the SNAP food-assistance program can receive deep discounts on admission.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
The aquarium calls Teacher’s Day annual, but when we checked, its newsroom hadn’t posted an announcement for the next one, so we can’t tell you when it will be. We also couldn’t confirm whether the free admission includes the 4D theater. An earlier Teacher Appreciation Weekend paired free admission with a 4D movie, but the two most recent announcements mention admission only. And neither of them says whether teachers need to reserve a free ticket ahead of time, only that they show a valid school ID.
