What Free Actually Gets You
Office 365 A1 is real but it is not the full desktop suite, and the difference matters. It includes “the web-based versions of core apps (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote)”, plus PC-only versions of Publisher and Access.
In practice: browser-based Word, Excel and PowerPoint at no cost, on any machine. What it does not include is the installed desktop application you may be used to. Who Qualifies, and How Long It Takes
Eligibility rests on two things: an eligible education email address, and “working at, or enrolled in, a qualified educational organization.” The institution has to qualify, not just the person, which is why a personal address will not work even if you teach.
Verification is sometimes instant and sometimes not. Microsoft says it can be “instantaneous through an automated verification process” or take “up to a month to confirm eligibility.” Start it before the term does rather than the week you need it.
