Sugar Mountain has snow day rates for K-12 teachers, and they’re limited to six counties near the mountain. When school is canceled, or declared a remote learning day, because of winter weather, teachers and students in those counties can get a full or half day lift ticket and rentals at reduced rates. The table on the page is headed for the new season, so it’s current as far as the page goes.

The counties are Ashe, Avery, Mitchell and Watauga in North Carolina, and Carter and Johnson in Tennessee. If your school sits in one of them, bookmark this before the first cold snap.

How To Get The Sugar Mountain Teacher Discount

The page says “Proof of residency must be presented,” and it lists what works: a school ID, a report card, a letter from school or a parent’s driver’s license. For a teacher, the school ID is the item on that list that fits. The page doesn’t say whether you buy online or at the ticket window, so check the mountain’s ticket page the evening your district announces a closure.

Timing matters. The rates are available Monday through Friday on non-holiday snow days, and the page says they’re not available for the Monday sessions of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday or Presidents’ Day weekend.

What The Rates Are

The table lists four numbers: 31 for a full day or half day slope and lift ticket, 21 for ski rentals, 36 for snowboard rentals and 18 for ice skating. The page doesn’t print a currency sign beside them. They read as dollar amounts, but confirm that at the window before you plan a family trip around them.

One condition applies to all of it. The page says your lift ticket and rental equipment are “non-refundable and non-transferable,” so if the roads turn out worse than the forecast, there’s no taking the ticket back.

Who Qualifies

The rate is for K-12 teachers and students from Avery, Ashe, Watauga, Mitchell, Carter and Johnson counties only. The page says college students don’t qualify for snow day rates. College faculty aren’t named either way, so if you teach at a college, ask the mountain before you count on the rate.

What We Couldn’t Confirm

The page lists proof that leans toward students, with a report card and a parent’s driver’s license among the choices, so what a teacher should bring is a judgment call. We also couldn’t confirm how Sugar Mountain knows your school is closed, whether a school just outside the six counties can qualify, or whether you can buy the rates online. If you live near a county line or teach part-time, write to the mountain first.
