If the laptop you grade on has seen better school years, or you’ve got a Surface in a cart and you’re wondering whether it’s worth a few minutes first, this is a quick check. Here’s who Microsoft says qualifies, how the check works and what falls outside it.
How To Get The Microsoft Surface Teacher Discount
The discount terms page says to enter the email address you use with your personal Microsoft account. If you’re eligible, you’ll be approved right away. Microsoft is specific about which account to use: it says to use the email associated with your personal Microsoft account, and not your work or school account, to check eligibility. If you normally sign in to Microsoft through a work or school account, use your personal one for this.
You don’t add a code at checkout. The terms say the offer is not combinable with other sales or promotions, and that the deeper discount is applied automatically and shown in your cart. So if a regular sale is running on the same item, you’ll see whichever price is lower, not both stacked together.
Who Counts As A Teacher
The terms describe the education discount as available to students and parents of students, including students enrolled in primary and grammar school through higher education, as well as home school programs, and to faculty currently working in education. Microsoft’s education page describes it as available to K-12 and higher education students, faculty and parents. The terms page says “faculty currently working in education” without splitting K-12 from college, so we can’t tell you more than that about where the line falls.
The discount is for your own purchases. Public entities, government entities, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, enterprise purchasers, and business or commercial purchasers don’t qualify. The page also says bulk orders aren’t valid, commercial purchases aren’t eligible and the offer is for personal use only, so a classroom order your school places isn’t what this is built for.
What’s Covered And What Isn’t
The terms page says select consumer Surface devices and accessories are eligible for up to 10% under the discount. The education page lists select Surface devices, student laptops and PC accessories as eligible for the 10% student discount. Both say “select,” so not every item in the store qualifies, and the “up to” wording means 10% is the ceiling.
The exclusions are a long list, and a few matter to teachers. The offer excludes Xbox consoles, games and accessories, Surface for Business devices, personalized or customized products, digital games, digital apps, in-app content and subscriptions, and associated content. It also excludes office software and apps, Windows 11 and Windows 10, and gift cards or services and subscriptions such as Microsoft 365, Game Pass and Skype. So the savings are on hardware, not on the software that runs on it.

The terms say the number of products per purchase may be subject to limitations and that Microsoft determines eligibility in its discretion, but they don’t give a number or explain how.
