Betty Brinn Children’s Museum doesn’t list a discount for individual teachers. What teachers get is on school field trips: the museum’s field trips page says chaperones are free, that teachers count as chaperones, and that schools, childcare centers and nonprofit groups of 10 or more pay $8 per child.

If you’re the one filling out the permission slips and counting heads, the number to plan around is one adult for every five children, so start lining up parents early. If you’re coming with your own kids instead of a class, skip down to Visiting On Your Own, because the field trip rate isn’t for you.

How To Get The Betty Brinn Children’s Museum Teacher Discount

There isn’t a teacher discount to claim at the desk, so the way in is a booked group visit. The field trips page describes a 90-minute self-guided field trip where a group explores the museum at its own pace. It calls this a discounted admission rate for schools, childcare centers and nonprofit groups of 10 or more: $8 per child, with a minimum of 10 students, which comes to $80.

Chaperones are free. The page asks for one adult teacher or chaperone, 18 or older, for every five children, and it says chaperones include teachers, teaching aids, parents or guardians. It also says your group may qualify for additional discounts, which would show up in your booking confirmation.

You start by sending a request, and the page is clear that a request isn’t a booking. A museum representative reaches out to confirm your visit details, dates are first-come, first-served, and preferred dates can’t be guaranteed. After that, full payment and a signed contract are due three weeks before the trip. Payments are non-refundable, and the museum accepts credit cards and checks. If you need more time to pay, the page says to email education@bbcmkids.org, and it adds that asking doesn’t guarantee an extension.

Planning The Rest Of The Day

The page has a few details that matter once you’re past the rate. Lunch needs a reservation: field trip groups must reserve the Atrium space in advance and pay a $50 cleaning fee. Buses may park along Wisconsin Avenue, and the page says the museum doesn’t provide funding to subsidize bus transportation for field trips right now.

If plans change, groups canceling 21 days or more in advance may apply their full payment toward a future visit. The page says to call 414-310-1150 or email education@bbcmkids.org to reschedule.

Add-On Programs And Special Groups

The field trips page lists add-on programs for specific grade bands, and the one aimed at first through third grade, Matter Matters, is listed at $5 more per child. Add-ons run 30 to 45 minutes per rotation, depending on group size. Groups mainly made up of children or adults with disabilities or sensitivities are eligible for a free self-guided field trip, according to the page’s FAQ.

One limit to know before you count on a membership: the page says museum memberships can’t be used for child or adult admission on field trips. A teacher who holds a family membership still goes in through the group booking.

Visiting On Your Own

The plan your visit page lists general admission for adults and children at $15, and says you save $1 on every ticket when you buy online in advance. We didn’t find teacher wording on that page or on the discounts and community page.

The discounts page lists a few things that apply to anyone who qualifies, teacher or not. Active military members are free. Museums for All is $5 per person, up to four people, for families involved in a foster care program or with a SNAP (EBT) card. Community Access Days give free admission on the third Thursday of every month from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. to guests who aren’t arriving as a group. Tickets are limited and first-come, first-served, and guests aren’t admitted past 6:30 p.m. The page also says schools, daycares and other organizations with groups larger than 10 guests aren’t admitted on those days and the museum doesn’t schedule group visits on them, so a class trip goes on a different day.

What We Couldn’t Confirm

The museum’s pages don’t define who counts as a teacher for the chaperone ratio beyond saying chaperones include teachers, teaching aids, parents or guardians. The field trips page says additional discounts may apply to your group, and the only one we could find listed there is the free self-guided trip for groups made up mostly of people with disabilities or sensitivities, so ask the museum what else could appear on your confirmation. We also didn’t find a rate for visiting as an individual teacher with proof of employment.
