Museums will use federal funds to support this initiative, teaming teachers with experts in informal education to design engaging out-of-classroom lessons to intrigue children with science. Kim Stewart, museum’s Director of Community Engagement said this form of outreach often goes underemphasized due to standardized tests favoring English, literacy and math over science education.

This year’s program will focus on elementary school teachers. It aims to help them lay down a foundation of science skills which will set their students up for success when they reach middle and secondary schools, said Ms. Thompson.

Museums across the nation are providing an enjoyable summer of playful learning for low-income families with EBT, SNAP or WIC cards at discounted rates of $3 per person up to six people, offering access to any museum under this offer. Visitors interested can make reservations online through this Museums for All program offered by Institute of Museum and Library Services with support provided by Association of Children’s Museums.
