AFT, the American Federation of Teachers, is the country’s second-largest teachers’ union, founded in 1916. Its own site puts membership at 1.875 million across five divisions: pre-K through 12th grade teachers, paraprofessionals and school staff, higher ed faculty and staff, public employees, and healthcare workers.
What’s Actually In It

The Shopping and Travel Side, Easy to Miss
Most of AFT’s benefit pages sit under different tabs, so members who only check the insurance page miss real money elsewhere. Confirmed directly on AFT’s own discounts and travel pages:
Dansko gives AFT members 20% off and free shipping. Teleflora runs 25% off flowers, gift baskets, and plants. AT&T’s best unlimited plan is up to $10 off per line per month. Buying a new car through the AFT-affiliated auto-buying program gets a $100 rebate on a union-assembled vehicle, on top of the pre-negotiated pricing itself.
On travel: Southwest Airlines runs a tiered discount, 8% off Business Select fares, 6% off Anytime fares, and 3% off select Wanna Get Away fares. Wyndham hotels run up to 20% off the best available rate at over 9,000 participating locations, and Hilton runs a flat 12% off chain-wide. Car rentals save up to 25%. Members also get discounted access to Disney, Universal Studios, and Six Flags.
AFT’s site also mentions “special group discounts” on auto and home insurance through Farmers, but doesn’t name a rate on the page itself, so there’s nothing to quote there beyond that it exists. Check with AFT directly if that’s the one you’re after.
Who Qualifies
Paying AFT members. The MetLife term life offer is specifically for new members, so if you’ve been a member for a while it may not apply, and it’s worth asking AFT directly rather than assuming either way. The shopping and travel discounts don’t carry that new-member restriction; they’re standing benefits of membership itself.
How to Claim It
Log into AFT’s member benefits site with your membership credentials. Aura and MetLife are separate signups through AFT’s partner pages, not an automatic discount. The shopping and travel discounts (Dansko, Teleflora, AT&T, Southwest, Wyndham, Hilton, car rentals) each route through their own AFT-branded partner link rather than a single dashboard, so check the specific category page for the one you want rather than expecting one central list.
