TELUS Spark in Calgary, Alberta doesn’t list a teacher rate on everyday admission, but a teacher who books a school program gets a free visit to Spark before the program day. For school programs, one teacher and up to eight chaperones are included at no additional cost. The free visit starts with a booking, because you show your booking confirmation email at admissions.
If you’re already weighing a field trip to Spark, the free visit is the part that makes the planning easier, since you get to walk through the place before your students do. We’ve laid out the steps and what the program includes.
How To Get The TELUS Spark Teacher Discount
Start with the booking. The Field Trip Guidebook says booking must be done at least 2 weeks in advance of the requested date. Its free-visit note says you can come visit Spark for free before your program to check the place out, and that you just show your booking confirmation email to admissions.
If you’d rather plan a self-explore visit with no program, the field trips page says to call 403.817.6800 to book your trip. Dollar amounts in this post are CAD.
What A Booked Trip Includes
The field trips page says the price of each field trip includes admission to Spark for up to 30 students, 1 educator, up to eight chaperones and all special education aides, and it calls that a 60% savings compared to regular prices. The chaperones have to meet the minimum adult-to-student ratios in the guidebook’s FAQs. The price line for the program itself is misprinted on that page, so we’re leaving the amount out. The bookings line, (403) 817-6800, is the place to confirm it.
Extra people can cost more. The page says additional students, up to a maximum of three, are $15 each, and additional chaperones over the eight included are $13 each. It adds that the program is for grades K-12 and describes it as a curricular-connected science experience.
If You Book A Self-Explore Visit
The field trips page lists self-explore at $15 per student and $13 per adult above the 1:4 ratio. The guidebook says one adult for every four students is included at no additional cost, and gives the example that a group of 20 students may bring up to five adults at no cost. Adults beyond that are subject to overlimit fees. The page says homeschool groups of 10 students or more get the same self-explore rates.
Who Counts As A Teacher
The free visit is tied to a booking, so the person with the booking confirmation email is the teacher the page has in mind. It doesn’t define the word by grade level or school type beyond describing its programs as being for grades K-12.
Visiting On Your Own
The admission page lists Adult admission at $33.95, describes general admission as an all-inclusive experience with full access to all the galleries, Infinity Dome shows and the Brainasium Outdoor Park, and doesn’t list a teacher or educator rate.
More For Teachers
The schools page and the field trips page invite teachers to join Spark’s education email list for teaching and learning ideas, school program updates, and professional development opportunities and workshops. If your school may qualify for Spark Learning Connections pricing, the guidebook says to contact your school board representatives to find out.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
The free-visit note in the guidebook is two sentences long, and neither one says what happens if you haven’t booked a program yet. It says the visit is before your program, so it doesn’t set a window for when you have to come. It doesn’t print an end date, and it doesn’t say how many people the free visit covers. The program price line is misprinted on the page, so we can’t tell you the base cost of a trip.
