CHULA VISTA, California — Sweetwater School District teachers and students arrived en masse for Monday’s School Board meeting fearing their jobs may be threatened. Up to 237 educators, or roughly one-third of its staff, could receive pink slips by March 15; that deadline applies across California schools.
Community outrage was widespread after the board voted to name a new board member with links to Sweetwater Teacher’s Union and its Political Action Committee, Patricia Fernandez. Lucy Ugarte and Francisco Tamayo wanted Fernandez as the new member, while Kate Bishop and Leslie Ray Bunker supported Jennifer Fuentecilla as an alternative candidate.
Parents speaking during public comments expressed the wish for a board member who will put students first instead of catering to union demands for contract negotiations on pay. Furthermore, parents noted how talented teachers have left for better-paid and more fully staffed districts that could impede student outcomes.
