The South Florida Science Center in West Palm Beach, which goes by Cox Science Center and Aquarium on its own website, offers teachers a discounted membership rather than a discounted day ticket. The center’s Teacher STEM Open House page says teachers save all year long with discounted science center memberships, and the membership page lists a Teacher Membership alongside its Individual, Family and Family Plus levels.
The one thing we can’t hand you is the price. The Teacher Membership line sends you to a separate link for rates and application, and that link sits behind a document we couldn’t open, so we can’t tell you what teachers pay or who qualifies. Everything below is what the center’s own pages do say.
How To Get The South Florida Science Center Teacher Discount
Start on the center’s membership page. It lists Teacher Membership as its own level, with the words “Click here for rates and application,” and the open house page says to click its link to check eligibility or to sign up. Because the teacher rate isn’t printed on the page itself, plan on looking at the rates and the eligibility rules before you pay anything.
If you’d rather ask a person, the center lists (561) 832-1988 on its pages, and the membership page invites questions by email.
What A Membership Includes
The membership page says all members receive free Science Center admission including premier exhibitions, free general admission to over 300 partnering museums around the world with some exclusions, and a 10% discount in the Science Gift Shop. It doesn’t say whether the Teacher Membership carries the same list, so read that as what the standard memberships include.
The page also sets some limits that apply to memberships in general. School trips are not included as a benefit of membership, and memberships are non-transferable, non-refundable and only valid for one household. If your plan is a class visit rather than a family one, a membership won’t cover it.
What The Standard Levels Cost
For comparison, the membership page lists Individual at $90, Family at $125 and Family Plus at $180. The open house page lists regular admission at $26 for adults and $20 for children 3 to 12. The Teacher Membership price isn’t on either page, which is why we can’t say whether it comes in under the Individual level.
The Teacher STEM Open House
The center also runs a separate Teacher STEM Open House. The page describes it as a professional development day of STEM education and exploration for community teachers, and says it showcases resources for K-12 STEM teachers in Palm Beach County. It’s free for teachers, who must register in advance, and it’s for all PBCSD K-12 educators with a current valid teacher I.D. The page doesn’t spell out what PBCSD stands for.
If your I.D. doesn’t have your picture on it, the page says to present a government-issued photo I.D. along with your school or home school I.D. at entrance and check-in. On the event day, it also says non-registered attendees are welcome to free admission with a valid teacher ID. This is a single event, not a year-round discount, so look at the page for current details instead of counting on it.
Day Admission And Class Visits
We read the center’s Discounted Admission page and its Education page looking for a teacher admission rate and didn’t find one on either. The Discounted Admission page lists offers for SNAP or WIC cardholders, for veterans and active-duty military, and for frontline workers and first responders, and it doesn’t list teachers. For a class visit, the open house page says to schedule your group for field trips, visits and school programs by calling the center or visiting the Education page.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
The Teacher Membership rate, who qualifies and how to apply all sit behind the Teacher Membership link, and we couldn’t read what’s there. The membership page doesn’t say whether the Teacher Membership is open to teachers outside Palm Beach County, and it doesn’t mention retired, substitute or homeschool teachers. It also doesn’t say whether the Teacher Membership comes with every benefit the standard levels list, or what proof of teaching you’d need to show.
