Shedd Aquarium offers a complimentary ticket to educators from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, and the offer is limited to those four states. The Discounts and Free Hours page says those educators can receive a complimentary Shedd ticket by reserving tickets online, and that the offer isn’t valid during special events.
If you teach anywhere in those four states, that’s a free day in Chicago to plan around, whether it’s a Saturday with your own kids or a scouting trip before you book your class. If your state isn’t on the list, the page doesn’t offer you a ticket, and we’ve noted what it does list for everyone else.
How To Get The Shedd Aquarium Teacher Discount
Start on the Discounts and Free Hours page and use the reserve button under its Educators entry, which takes you through reserving tickets online. The Educators page describes the same offer as registering online, and says the complimentary ticket isn’t valid during special events or for admission to the 4-D Experience.
Shedd says advance reservations are highly recommended because of the high demand for tickets, so reserve before the day you want to go. The page also says Shedd won’t accept tickets sold by non-authorized sellers, so reserve through Shedd itself.
Who Counts As An Educator
The page says educators from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, and that’s all it says. It doesn’t explain whether the four states refer to where you live, where your school is or where you’re certified, and it doesn’t say whether classroom teachers only, support staff, private school staff or homeschool educators are covered. If you’re near a state line, that’s worth a call before you drive in.
What The Ticket Doesn’t Cover
Two limits are in print: the offer isn’t valid during special events, and the Educators page adds that it isn’t valid for admission to the 4-D Experience. The page calls it a complimentary Shedd ticket and doesn’t say which ticket that is, or whether anyone you bring along gets a lower price.
If You Live In Illinois
The Discounts and Free Hours page lists a separate offer for everyone, not just teachers: Illinois residents enjoy free admission to Shedd Aquarium during select hours throughout the year. That one is for Illinois residents only, so teachers in Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin need the educator ticket instead.
For Your Classroom
The ticket is for you. For your students, the Educators page says Shedd’s free digital learning resources include asynchronous activities, videos and virtual habitat explorations, so you can start the unit before anyone boards a bus. Shedd also runs an Education Access Program, which its page calls a fully complimentary virtual or on-site experience. It’s available to fourth and fifth grade classrooms at Shedd’s selected partner schools, so it’s a different thing from the educator ticket.
Cash Back Routes We Checked
A free ticket leaves nothing to earn cash back on, but if you buy tickets for guests, Fluz lists 1.5% cashback at Shedd Aquarium with a Fluz virtual card. We didn’t test whether Shedd’s ticketing accepts a virtual card, so check that first, and check the rate on Fluz before you pay. We didn’t find a TopCashback page for Shedd, and Rakuten’s address for it loads a general page instead of a store page.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
Neither the Discounts and Free Hours page nor the Educators page names a verification step, so we can’t say whether you’ll be asked for a school ID, a pay stub or anything else at the entrance. We also couldn’t find a start or end date for the offer, a limit on how many times you can use it, or which ticket tier it is. Shedd lists Guest Relations at 312-939-2438 for ticketing questions.
