Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is an independent, non-profit organization in Sarasota, Florida dedicated to marine science and education. Established as the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory in Placida in 1955 and later taking its current name from one of its first major donors’ family, Mote is internationally renowned for marine and estuarine research with programs focused on sea turtles, coral reef species, the effects of natural toxicants in the environment, wild fish restocking techniques and food production technologies.
Mote Marine Laboratory not only offers world-class research programs at their City Island facility, but is also leading the way in developing innovative marine technology to positively influence public policy. Their outreach efforts go well beyond Sarasota and Manatee County with the establishment of the Marine Science Education & Outreach Center on Anna Maria City Pier which attracts visitors from all around.
Mote Marine Lab boasts several interactive exhibits that teach about various aspects of oceanography. Kids can discover different species of invertebrates or witness first-hand dissecting of squid. Adding to all that, Mote Marine Lab features over 100 marine life species as well as its 135,000 gallon shark habitat and touch pools dedicated to stingrays and eels!
