Marshall was born in Virginia and attended Lincoln University (the oldest African-American institution of higher education in the U.S.). Unable to gain entrance to University of Maryland School of Law due to race discrimination, he went on to Howard University where he graduated at the top of his class and went on to practice law. Due to Marshall’s tireless advocacy on behalf of all citizens regardless of race he received appointments by Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson both as U.S. Court of Appeals Judge as well as Supreme Court Justice positions respectively.
After joining the army, Marshall attended what is now known as Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where he made an effort to be an excellent student. He would stay up late studying, polish his boots until they shone, and was eventually promoted to second lieutenant despite his inferior rank among classmates. Marshall later served at various military stations across America.
