General Motors has a real teacher program, and GM runs it directly. The Educator Appreciation Program gives current school and college employees a special offer on eligible new Chevrolet EVs and Cadillac gas and electric vehicles. The program pages we read don’t state a flat percentage or dollar amount, so what you save depends on the vehicle and on the other offers running when you buy.
GM says it has been building vehicles since 1908, and its About page describes four vehicle brands and more than 90,000 employees. ID.me’s shop page for General Motors says the company has a Teachers discount and/or cash back offer, and the details sit on GM’s own program site. Chevrolet and Cadillac are the two brands the program’s rules name.
How To Get The GM Teacher Discount
The offer runs through an authorization number, so you get it before you visit a dealer.
- Go to GM’s Educator Appreciation site, click “Get Authorization Number” and follow the prompts. GM emails a confirmation when it issues the number, so print it or keep that email handy.
- Take the number to a participating GM dealer. The dealer must have it before you take delivery.
- Bring a copy of your school ID or badge, or a pay stub from the last 30 days with everything redacted except the pay stub date, your name and your school’s name.
- The person buying also brings a copy of their driver’s license with the license number redacted. The ZIP code and date of birth on it have to match what was used to get the authorization number.
Cadillac Financial’s purchase programs page lists eligible participants as current employees of public schools, private school grades preK through 12, and college or university professors or faculty. The program site’s own overview and rules describe it more broadly, as active employees of a public school, private school, university or college. If you work at a college in a role other than faculty, ask before you count on it, since GM says it has the final decision on all eligibility requirements. You can sponsor your spouse, who can then use the offer on a vehicle of their own. The rules we read name no other relatives.
Each participant gets two authorizations a year, and each number is good for 90 days. The offer can’t be applied to a purchase or lease you’ve already completed, so get the number first. The vehicle has to be new and unused, and it has to be for personal, noncommercial use. If you pay cash or take out a loan, you must keep the vehicle for at least six months after delivery. Dealers can charge a documentation fee of no more than $75, unless state law sets the fee or the dealership charges every customer the same one.
Dealer participation is voluntary, so call ahead and ask whether the dealership will sell under the program. The overview says you can combine the offer with most current offers, while GM’s fine print says it isn’t available with some. If you work for a state or municipal government, ethics and gift rules may limit whether you can accept it. GM can change or withdraw the program at any time, and vehicle eligibility can change without notice, so check the list of eligible vehicles on the program site before you shop.
