KITTANANG – Due to inclement weather and closure of locks and dams, organizers were forced to change the launch site of a Gateway Clipper leaf-peeping tour on Armstrong County’s Allegheny River last week; nonetheless, Freeport residents welcomed it warmly as planned despite these obstacles. Tour director Debbie Ziegler expressed her delight with such strong local support: “We were so delighted.”
Ziegler has coordinated the tour since its beginnings in 2021. Although she cannot confirm if the tour will run again this year, she hopes that next time around it could begin in Freeport to bypass Kittanning where Lock and Dam No. 6 was closed for maintenance purposes.
In the interim, this tour continues to provide narrated sightseeing cruises on Pittsburgh’s three rivers as well as character cruises for kids, moonlight dance cruises and specialty entertainment/event cruises. Riverboats depart from 350 W. Station Square Dr. The company is run by Terry Wirginis’ grandfather who pioneered incentive marketing through giving away free fine china as incentives in banks or stores in exchange for deposits of only $5 each; ultimately making his fortune selling fine china in banks in exchange for one piece for $5 deposits then branching out into cruises that became known as Gateway Clipper Fleet Cruises.
