Teachers often feel underserved by the housing market and in many cities their options for affordable living are limited – particularly in expensive coastal cities like Miami or San Francisco.
One solution to this issue is teacher-centered housing communities, which are popping up around the country. These places not only offer teachers affordable housing but are designed with their needs in mind – such as being close to schools and in a vibrant urban environment.
Oxford Mills, a newly constructed complex near Center City in Philadelphia, is offering teachers an additional perk: 25% discount on rent. That’s enough to reduce a teacher’s monthly payment by nearly half.
Oxford Mills offers educators a choice of floor plans, from studio to two-bedroom apartments. Developer Greg Hill says the community – one of only three similar projects in Toronto – is ideal for teachers at public, parochial and charter schools alike.
This community offers unique amenities not commonly found in other apartment buildings, like an on-site gym and pool. Furthermore, developers claim it’s one of the few in the city where residents can have their own dedicated apartment manager who will assist with everything from cleaning to repairs.
American Landmark Apartments in Dallas is teaming up with Urban Teachers to offer 25 apartments at their Macallan on Ross complex in downtown Dallas at a reduced monthly rate. If the project succeeds, more than 128 new teachers could have affordable housing in an area that relies heavily on them for its future growth.
