Amtrak doesn’t have a teacher discount. Its everyday discounts page lists nine categories, from children and seniors to military, veterans, students and groups, and educators aren’t one of them. What’s there is a student fare for riders 17 to 24, a 15-person group rate that can suit a school trip, and a few discounts a teacher might qualify for through something other than teaching.
Amtrak runs passenger trains on the Northeast Corridor and on a National Network of regional and long-distance routes, and Acela Business Class is one of its fare classes. The gap for teachers is easy to spot on its everyday discounts page, which lists each category with its eligibility and mentions no teachers, educators, school employees or unions.
How To Get The Amtrak Teacher Discount
There’s no teacher code or ID check for this one. If you’re a teacher riding on your own, the fare you’re quoted is the fare you pay unless you fit one of the categories below for a different reason. If you’re a teacher planning a trip for a class, the group rate is the route worth pursuing.
- Decide which case you’re in: a group of 15 or more paying passengers, a student between 17 and 24, or an individual who fits another Amtrak category.
- For a group, submit Amtrak’s online group travel request, or call 1-800-USA-1GRP or email groupsales@amtrak.com.
- For a student fare, search on Amtrak’s site or app and enter the student discount code before you pay.
Group Travel For A School Trip
Amtrak says passengers traveling together in groups of 15 or more may be eligible for a discount, and that group discounts apply to Coach tickets only. The wording is cautious: discounts aren’t valid on all trains, they’re offered at Amtrak’s discretion, and some services don’t offer them at all. Group space may be limited, and requests are subject to approval based on availability, so Amtrak advises sending your request as early as possible for the best fares.
If your group is big enough to fill an entire car, Amtrak says it offers group seating and exclusive occupancy, meaning a dedicated train car for your group. For minors, it requires at least one designated chaperone for every six passengers under 18 aboard the train. Amtrak’s page doesn’t say how large the discount is, so you won’t have a number until the group desk quotes your specific trip.
The Student Discount
Amtrak gives student passengers ages 17 to 24 with a valid student ID 15% off, using promo code V814. It’s valid in Coach and Acela Business Class only, needs a minimum of one day’s advance purchase, and can’t be used on bookings made with Amtrak Guest Rewards points or Points & Cash bookings. Amtrak’s terms exclude a set of routes, including Keystone, Pennsylvanian, Missouri River Runner, Hiawatha, Wolverine, Blue Water, Pere Marquette, Lincoln Service, Gold Runner and Capitol Corridor. It’s a student fare, so it helps a college-age child, not a working teacher.
Other Categories That Might Apply To You
Amtrak’s everyday discounts page lists 10% off for seniors, active-duty military and their spouses and dependents, veterans, and Rail Passengers Association members. It also lists 50% off for children ages 2 to 12, with infants under 2 riding free. A teacher who’s also a veteran or who holds an RPA membership can use those, and there’s no teaching requirement attached to any of them.
Amtrak also has a federal government discount, but it’s for federal employees and has to be booked through a federal employee’s travel management company or corporate booking tool, not on Amtrak.com. Its page doesn’t mention teachers or school staff. A North Carolina state employee discount also exists, for 15% off Coach fares on the Carolinian and Piedmont, sold through ncbytrain.org, and the page doesn’t define which state employees qualify or mention school employees, so a North Carolina teacher would need to check with the state program before assuming it covers them.
