Verizon takes 10% off the monthly price of Fios home internet for teachers. You verify your teaching status through ID.me on Verizon’s teacher page, and Verizon applies the discount to an eligible Fios plan. Retired teachers are excluded, and Fios is only sold in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic.
The discount is a standing part of Verizon’s “Those Who Serve” program, which also covers military members, first responders and nurses. On Verizon’s teacher page, Fios plans with the teacher discount start at just $26 a month for the Fios 300 Mbps plan with Auto Pay.
How To Get The Verizon Fios Teacher Discount
Start on Verizon’s teachers page and choose Check eligibility. Verizon’s Fios FAQ says to follow the prompts to validate your teaching status with ID.me, and that Verizon is partnered with ID.me for fast verification of your teacher status. You validate your teaching employment as part of the discount registration, and Verizon’s FAQ says you only need to register once to validate eligibility for your entire account.
What happens next depends on where you stand. If you already have a Fios plan that qualifies, you sign in to your Fios account after validation to see the discount. If you don’t have a qualifying plan yet, the FAQ says to sign in after validation, open your My Plan page, and change to the 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps or Gigabit Connection plan, and then view your discount.
Who Qualifies
You must be a currently-employed teacher, meaning kindergarten to grade 12 or a post-secondary instructor. Verizon’s FAQ says that at this time only active teachers can apply, so a retired teacher doesn’t qualify. Teachers in Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York may be asked to provide a teaching certificate during validation.
Fios Home Internet is currently available in key metro areas in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Delaware, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington DC. If your address is outside those areas, the discount has nothing to attach to. The page also notes that availability varies, so check your own address first.
The Fine Print
Verizon’s page says the $26 price is for the Fios 300 Mbps plan and needs Auto Pay and paper-free billing. It also says a $99 setup charge and other terms apply. The price includes the 10% monthly discount applied to the base monthly rate. The limit is one military, first responder, teachers or nurses discount per account, so a household with a nurse and a teacher has to pick one. You can combine the teacher discount with other offers, excluding nurse, student, first-responder and military discounts.
Don’t expect to see the discount in the cart. Verizon says it won’t show up in your shopping cart, but you’ll see it in the final step of your order and on your bill in 1-2 billing cycles.
What We Couldn’t Confirm
We didn’t sign in with ID.me or place an order, so we can’t say what the verification screens look like or which documents Verizon asks for if ID.me can’t confirm you on the first try. The FAQ mentions an upload step without describing it here. Verizon’s Fios page is also the only source we found for the $26 starting price, so treat it as a starting point and check your own plan and address before you count on it.
