Teachers Federal Credit Union

Teachers Federal Credit Union gives members a 0.50% rate discount on a qualified consumer loan when it’s set up with AutoPay from a Teachers Checking Account, but despite the name, joining isn’t about being a teacher. It’s about where you live, work, worship, or go to school.

Teachers Federal Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit credit union based on Long Island, founded decades ago by a group of local educators. Its own site puts its current size at $9.9 billion in assets, more than 467,000 members, and 33 branches.

Who Actually Qualifies

The credit union’s own marketing pages don’t state an eligibility restriction anywhere, which reads like open membership if that’s all you check. It isn’t. Confirmed against the credit union’s NCUA-registered field of membership (charter 8116): membership is open to people who live, work, worship, or attend school in Nassau County, New York, or in these specific Suffolk County towns: Huntington, Babylon, Smithtown, Islip, Brookhaven, Riverhead, and Southold. Immediate family of an existing member can also join regardless of location. A separate Florida expansion opened branches there on its own terms, which is why a Naples, FL branch exists without meaning the credit union is open nationwide.

If you don’t live, work, worship, or attend school in that specific area and aren’t family of a member, this isn’t a discount you can actually claim, whatever a generic teacher-discount list might imply.

What You Get, If You’re In

A $1 savings deposit is the only cost to join. Once you’re a member, open a Teachers Checking Account, apply for a qualified consumer loan, and set up AutoPay from that account to get the 0.50% rate discount. It’s a smaller perk than the union benefit suites elsewhere on this site, but there’s no dues tradeoff to weigh against it, just the geographic requirement above.

How to Claim It

Join with the $1 deposit, open a Teachers Checking Account, then apply for a qualified consumer loan and set up AutoPay from that account to get the rate discount.
